Job Purpose
An engineering laboratory (lab) technician may serve in all existing and emerging GUtech Engineering Department labs, workshops and warehouses and in excursions and practical elements of department courses inside or outside the campus based on the needs of the department
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
l. Technical and Safety Training

•     Conduct training sessions for students, ensuring a strong emphasis on laboratory safety protocols.

•     Provide guidance and support to students in executing lab experiments, fostering a conducive learning environment.

•     Train and supervise students, interns, and junior staff members in laboratory techniques and protocols

 

2.    Teaching Support

•     Collaborate with faculty members to coordinate and assist in courses using engineering labs and workshops or practical courses outside the campus.

•     Ensure the availability and functionality of necessary equipment for lab sessions.

•     Assist in the preparation and presentation of laboratory demonstrations.

 

3.    lnstrument, Materials and Components Maintenance and Procurement

•     Plan, set up, and undertake controlled experiments and trials to ensure the readiness of equipment.

•     Record, analyze, and interpret data, troubleshooting technical issues as needed.

•     Perform basic maintenance tasks on laboratory instruments to ensure optimal functionality.

•     Report any malfunctions or issues promptly, coordinating with relevant personnel for repairs.

•     Maintain, calibrate, clean, and test the sterility of laboratory and workshop equipment.

•     Maintain inventories of supplies, overseeing proper storage.

 

4.    Risk Assessment and Safety Measures

•     Handle, store, and dispose of chemicals and other materials and components  in accordance with safety regulations.

•     Carry out risk assessments and implement appropriate safety measures.

•     Ensure compliance with established protocols for handling hazardous materials.

•     Contribute to the development and implementation of standard operating procedures

(SOPs) for laboratory processes.

 

5.    Non-educational Tasks

•     Collaborate with external partners, industry professionals, and research organizations

for collaborative projects based on the directives of the Head of Department.

Other duties assigned by the line manager.

Qualification, Experience and Skills
Education/ Professional Qualification ·       Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Process, Chemical, Environmental or Mechatronic Engineering or related fields
Work Experience ·       0 – 5 years of experience
Core Competencies and personal Attributes ·       Operationally excellent with strong attention to detail and accuracy

·       Fluent in English

·       People-oriented, approachable, and proactive

·       Self-motivated and results-driven
