Full Job Description

Job title: Research Assistant – World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism

Tasks:

The successful candidate will support research projects in the faculty through performing the following tasks:

  • Perform literature reviews and execute field surveys to gather data on UNESCO World Heritage candidates and sites in Oman.
  • Help plan and facilitate workshops in Muscat focused on sustainable tourism practices, engaging stakeholders and promoting strategies for sustainability.
  • Plan and execute conferences in Muscat to foster collaboration among local and international experts, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Provide logistical support and access to resources for researchers conducting fieldwork and data collection for dissertations and scientific papers.
  • Develop and deliver presentations for workshops, professional conferences, and events, ensuring alignment with project partners’ expectations.
  • Collaborate with project partners to compile, edit, and format research findings for publication according to professional standards.
  • Gather and analyze data using various analytical tools to support ongoing research projects under the UNESCO Chair.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of literature on world heritage and sustainable tourism, summarizing key findings and identifying gaps in knowledge.
  • Compile comprehensive dossiers for site nominations, including historical, cultural, and geographical data, ensuring compliance with UNESCO guidelines.
  • Use digital tools and technologies to document heritage sites, create digital archives, and promote accessibility of heritage information through digital platforms. Train local staff in digitalization techniques and develop protocols for ongoing documentation.
  • Perform any other activities required by the project line manager.

Requirements and Competencies:

Candidates for this position should:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Tourism Management, Heritage Studies, Environmental Management).
  • Previous experience in research, preferably in the areas of world heritage and sustainable tourism.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and data analysis techniques.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
