A Student Counsellor at the German University of Technology in Oman is expected to work with students, academics, and other stakeholders to help students to succeed academically by providing emotional and social guidance. The student counsellor will work closely with the student services manager to achieve the following outcomes:
Duties and responsibilities:
Address and listen to students’ emotional, social, and behavioural concerns.
- Provide education/awareness on topics affecting students’ success.
- Work directly with students to develop achievable goals.
- Assist with conflict mediation and resolution between students and students and lecturers (non-academic) to ensure that students’ goals are not affected.
- Offer concrete and necessary assistance to students to cope with social, emotional, and behavioural problems and issues.
- Offer referrals to outside resources, such as for mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Provide advisory sessions as appropriate and necessary.
- Maintain formal records covering aspects of guidance work undertaken.
- Provide emotional and social counselling to students individually and in groups as necessary.
- Offer feedback to faculty/staff on factors that promote or hinder students’ learning.
- Develop and organise awareness campaigns on different topics related to students’ social life and mental health.
- Supervise relevant Student Clubs and other students’ groups, as required.
- Build reports and data on student issues and support provided for different stakeholders, as and when required.
- Assist in organising new students’ orientation.
- Other assignments as and when assigned.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor degree in psychology, counselling, mental health, social work, behavioral sciences, health sciences, or any other related field.
- Experience and/or training in mental health support.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both Arabic and English.
- A high level of organisational skills and initiative.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution and mediation.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
