Job Description: Student Counsellor

Reporting to: Head of Registration and Student Affairs Department

Overview

The University Student Counsellor offers comprehensive support and guidance to students, promoting their mental health and well-being, which directly contributes to their academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct one-on-one counselling sessions with students to address a variety of concerns, including personal, social, and mental health issues.
  • Facilitate group counselling sessions to provide support and guidance on specific topics, such as time management, study skills, and coping with anxiety.
  • Conduct a range of relevant assessments to identify students’ needs and develop personalised intervention plans.
  • Connect students with relevant resources, both on and off campus, such as academic advising, career services, health services, and external counselling practitioners.
  • Develop and implement counselling programmes and workshops to address the needs of the student population.
  • Proactively reach out to students to promote awareness of counselling services and prevention programmes.
  • Conduct workshops and informative sessions for academics on how to identify critical cases for referrals, ensuring early intervention and effective support for students.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and counselling sessions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in counselling, psychology, or a related field
  • Experience working with university students is preferable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent English proficiency

  1. Student Satisfaction: Measure student satisfaction with counselling services through surveys and feedback.
  2. Sessions and workshops Attendance: Monitor attendance rates for counselling sessions and workshops.
  3. Retention Rates: Assess the impact of counselling services on student performance.
  4. Counselling Outcomes: Track the academic progression of students who have received counselling.
  5. Documentation Completeness: Ensure that counselling records are complete and accurate.
  6. Compliance: Adhere to all relevant ethical guidelines and regulations.
